Galicia in figures

You say: Galicia is very small. I say to you: Galicia is a world... Even though small in size. In depth, a place is as big as you wish...
Vicente Risco [ 1884-1963 ], writer

THE COUNTRY OF FINISTERRE

On the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, to the far west of Europe, there is a green and blue country. This was the end of the Old World, according to the Greeks and where Homer said the sun finished its cycle, to emerge again in the east with the new day.

Located to the south of the Cantabrian Sea, always linked with the Celts and to the north of the disputed Mediterranean territory, Galicia forged a culture at the crossroads between these two worlds.

To the north of Portugal, in the northwest of Spain there is a small country of contrasts and surprises around every corner. Here is a country with an inexhaustible depth of experiences.

TRADITION AND INNOVATION

We Galicians like to talk and quite often when starting a conversation with us, the visitor ends up talking about themselves, their country and their work.

Our life revolves around work. Originating from a tradition of agriculture and fishing, which has now been modernised, Galicians have built industries based on their own resources but also based on innovation and creativity.

The singing of all the birds in Galicia stopped for a moment in contemplation of so much future ahead.
X. L. Méndez Ferrín [ 1938 ], writer

WITH THE STRENGTH OF DAWN

Galicia is at an exceptional period in its history. Since 1981, Galicians have had a parliament and democratically elected government in a political framework that entrusts it with wide-ranging powers within the Spanish State.

Until 1980, Galicia was a country where people often said goodbye. There was no other option in a land from which 2,500,000 people emigrated in only a century and a half (1836-1980), a figure that is very nearly the same as today's population.

But our country has been slowly recovering since 1980, due to economic development enabling a new international presence for Galicia.
