Автомобильный транспорт

It is the most widely-used mode of transport for the carriage of goods within the European Union. Contracting road transport is simple and fast.

Advantages and disadvantages of road transport

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • It can come to any point connected to the road network. Only mode of transport capable of offering door to door service.
  • Speed.
  • Medium cost.
  • Due to the low volume of goods transported with each trip, it is more polluting than any other mode of transport.
  • Traffic on roads and highways is increasingly congested

Legal aspects

The transport of goods by road is regulated by the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (Geneva, 1956).

Documentation

The convention establishes a uniform type of contract, the CMR, which contains the conditions agreed upon by the carrier and the consigner.

The functions of the CMR are:

  • Contract of carriage
  • Proof of delivery of the merchandise

Contracting

In road transport you can contract full loads, that is, the entire capacity of a lorry for a single consigner from the point of origin to the destination. If your volume of goods is low, you can make a less-than-load shipment and pay only for the space occupied.

You can contract overland transport through transport agents or freight forwarders who act as intermediaries. The other option is to contact the carriers themselves, who make the shipment in  their own vehicles.

In the market for road transport, especially for full loads, there are usually many companies to choose from; many will be small businesses. byGalicia recommends that you choose your carrier carefully Make sure it is a reliable company that will deliver the merchandise to the specified destination, and that it is financially capable of fulfilling its responsibilities in the event of an accident or damage to the merchandise. You must remember that the carrier will have your merchandise in its hands and will be the one delivering it to your customer, which means reliability is a key factor.

Rates

Systems for setting rates in road transport vary considerably. You will usually be charged based on kilometres travelled or a distance radius and the weight of the goods. For goods of considerable volume, carriers use a volume/chargeable weight conversion factor that tends to range between 1 m³ =250 Kg. and 1m³=333 Kg.
